Our Purpose Matters
The Healthy Living Programme (HLP) is dedicated to enhancing community health through accessible nutrition and wellness initiatives. With a strong focus on collaboration, we aim to empower retailers to make a positive impact on their customers' lives.

Our History: A Commitment to Healthy Living
2004
Pilot for the SGF Healthy Living Programme (Previously known as the Neighbourhood Shops Initiative)was a partnership between Robert Wiseman Dairies, the Scottish Grocers’ Federation, major operators in the convenience sector and Public Health Scotland (Previously known as Scottish Executive Health Department) & Scottish Government.
2005
Phase two of the SGF Healthy Living Programme was launched, expanding the initiative to 197 participating stores across Scotland. This phase focused on increasing the availability of healthier products in convenience stores.
2010
The programme continued to grow, reaching a milestone of 1,000 retailers actively participating. This demonstrated a strong commitment from retailers in promoting healthier choices in local communities.
2014
The first breakfast trial event was held, introducing children to the benefits of starting their day with a nutritious meal. This laid the foundation for future large-scale breakfast events.
2017
Following the success of the initial trials, breakfast events officially became part of the programme, helping schools and retailers work together to provide healthier food options to young people.
2019
The Welby Breakfast were introduced to help engage children in healthier eating habits. The initiative was rolled out across Scottish convenience stores, making healthier choices more fun and accessible.
2020
Participation in the programme continued to rise, with over 2,000 retailers actively involved. Retailers increasingly integrated healthier products into their stores, reinforcing HLP’s mission.
2024
The programme reached a new milestone, with over 2,300 retailers now part of the initiative. Stores continue to implement HLP merchandising and promotions to support healthier shopping habits.
2025
Over 40,000 pupils have now attended an HLP event, demonstrating the programme’s ongoing impact on schools, retailers, and communities in fostering healthier eating habits.
